The past week has been incredible, and it’s all because of you.

More than 750,000 people have sent comments to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) demanding the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods.

This past October, when people like you – parents, farmers, health care professionals, and other concerned citizens – came together to launch this campaign, we only dreamed we would come so far, so quickly. It just goes to show how incredible our collective voice is and how out of step the FDA is with the desires of the American public.

You made this happen. It was thousands of people like you telling their friends and family about this issue that’s made this campaign such a success. Just last week, you succeeded in convincing MoveOn.org to promote Eric Schlosser and Gary Hirshberg’s petition on SignOn.org. In less than 36 hours, more than 200,000 people signed the petition to the FDA via SignOn.org – and brought us one step closer to our goal of one million comments.

You’re building a movement of people who care how their food is produced. This issue crosses partisan and ideological lines. Over 90 percent of Americans – left, right, and center – support labeling genetically engineered foods. Five hundred organizational allies from diverse perspectives have also partnered with us on this campaign.

At Just Label It, we’ve been working hard to create a big tent with many voices, all with a common ask of our government – label genetically engineered foods so we can make informed decisions. It’s our right. It’s time that the United States joins the more than 40 countries that require genetically engineered foods to be labeled.

1. Chickens may be the most romantically inclined of all farm animals. They create strong social bonds and, in a natural environment, males will call hens over to share their food, even picking up and dropping food repeatedly in front of a hen as an offering. Hens make devoted mothers, too. Research reveals that even before her chicks hatch, a hen will call to them, and they respond from within their eggs. John Webster, emeritus professor at Bristol University, said that the way a hen teaches her chicks what to eat, where to find food, and what to avoid “is pretty close to culture—and an advanced one at that.”

2. Studies prove that pigs are smarter than our canine friends. On video game tests (yes, pigs can play videogames using joysticks they control with their mouths), they can perform as well as primates. Like a cat’s whiskers, a pig’s snout provides her with heightened senses to navigate and interact with her environment. In fact, pigs’ noses are so sensitive that they can smell roots and tubers deep underground, a skill that’s been used for centuries to find truffles.

3. Science shows that cows are good at figuring out problems and take pleasure in finding solutions. Researchers who challenged cows to open a door to get food measured the animals’ neural activity and found that their “brainwaves showed the cows’ excitement [when they solved the problem]; their heartbeat went up and some even jumped into the air. We called it their Eureka moment.”

4. Did you know that Ben Franklin believed the turkey—not the bald eagle—should be America’s icon? “The turkey is in comparison a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America … a bird of courage,” Franklin said. His admiration was well founded. These birds are smart, fast, and indeed brave. And turkeys have something in common with peacocks, too. Ever seen a wild tom (male turkey) trying to romance a hen? With his tail feathers stretching up and wings jutting downward, he doubles his size in an attempt to woo the apple of his eye.

5. Need a fifth reason to have a heart for farm animals? Like dogs and cats, farm animals are individuals with personalities, preferences, and most importantly, a desire to enjoy life instead of suffer.

Voices, voices, voices, many more voices are being raised and family farmers are at the forefront of being heard by the courts about how Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds are polluting the organic and non-gmo seeds.

Farmers used to build their own seed stores to use on their farms and they shared these feed stores with other farmers, now these are being contaminated.

We need to have our food labeled if it contains genetically modified ingredients, but, across the world it has been shown that when people know that their food contains genetically modified ingredients they will not buy it. That’s why some countries will not accept Monsanto’s seeds. We have the right to know and we can all support our farmers who want to have the right to raise non-GMO and organic food for us to eat.

On January 31^st, family farmers will begin the first stage of a court case filed against agro-business powerhouse, Monsanto. The goal of the case, Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association (OSGATA) vs. Monsanto, is to protect the 300,000 organic and non-GMO American farmers from the genetic trespass of Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds, which contaminate organic crops and often leave farmers vulnerable to harmful patent infringement lawsuits.

Monsanto currently controls the genetics of nearly 90 percent of 5 major commodity crops including corn, soybeans, cotton, canola and sugar beets. Many farmers who do not use Monsanto seeds have had to stop growing their own crops in order to avoid genetic contamination from those used in fields nearby. According to OSGATA, Monsanto has “created an atmosphere of fear in rural America and driven dozens of farmers into bankruptcy.”

Food Democracy Now!, an organization working towards building a sustainable food system, says that Monsanto has filed 144 lawsuits against farmers, and settled out of court for undisclosed amounts of money for an additional 700 cases. These lawsuits leave farmers broke and unable to afford the legal costs associated with fighting Monsanto for something beyond their control in the first place.

I wonder how many more millions would have raised their voices if, say, twitter and facebook had shut down for a couple of hours!

Kudos to you! My wish would be that we would speak this loudly about our food, that we would stop Monsanto’s GMO, that we would have labels on our food so we know that it is not genetically modified. That we would save the small family farmers. We deserve the right to know what we are eating. Hopefully this will encourage us to lift our strong voices in creating a world where people are living abundant and peaceful lives.

A big hurrah to you!!!!! We’ve won for now — SOPA and PIPA were dropped by Congress today — the votes we’ve been scrambling to mobilize against have been cancelled.

The largest online protest in history has fundamentally changed the game.  You were heard.

On January 18th, 13 million of us took the time to tell Congress to protect free speech rights on the internet. Hundreds of millions, maybe a billion, people all around the world saw what we did on Wednesday.  See the amazing numbers here and tell everyone what you did.

This was unprecedented. Your activism may have changed the way people fight for the public interest and basic rights forever.

The MPAA (the lobby for big movie studios which created these terrible bills) was shocked and seemingly humbled.  “‘This was a whole new different game all of a sudden,’ MPAA Chairman and former Senator Chris Dodd told the New York Times. ‘[PIPA and SOPA were] considered by many to be a slam dunk.’”

“’This is altogether a new effect,’ Mr. Dodd said, comparing the online movement to the Arab Spring. He could not remember seeing ‘an effort that was moving with this degree of support change this dramatically’ in the last four decades, he added.”

The book club takes place at Lighthouse Center Inc., in Whitmore Lake, MI, my spiritual home. I’m looking forward to the discussions, where we can all share what we have taken from these books, we can discuss our different opinions, we will not all agree, but we will learn from one another, this is part of the joy from reading and discussing – it helps all of us grow. Creating a safe place where we can discuss and share our ideas helps us learn to be open to others opinions and beliefs.

Although I haven’t written about my spiritual life it continues to become a larger part of me and has been an integral part of developing my Green Living Planet blog, writing my book and developing businesses that are in harmony with what I work at practicing each day.

For thousands of years this planet has created wars to advance and force religious opinions on one another, and yet, as I study the different ideologies and philosophies there is so much that is similar. The journey begins with one step – this is a small step, but, growth, understanding and acceptance must begin somewhere, and why not in this community. Discussions that have extremely diverse opinions are difficult, but, it is our opinion, it is our reality – our discomfort comes from the disturbance of our chosen reality.

I’m looking forward to reading these books, to be open and enjoy the ideas that will be shared in this group. Perhaps in your community you could begin a book club that will read books with different religious and spiritual ideas. You never know, there may be something that will resonate with your reality that will allow you to be more open and communicate easier with others who do not share your specific beliefs.

Mmmm! Vegan Hot Chocolate

1 cup – 365 Organic Almond Milk Unsweetened*
1/2 tsp -365 organic vanilla
2 tsp – Dagoba Organic Chocolate – Cacao Powder**
2 tsp – Truvia***

* 365 is a Whole Foods brand, the unsweetened is important for me, no added sugar
** it’s important to use a high grade of cocoa and preferably organic
*** or sweetener of your choice, but, this is 0 calorie and safe for diabetics or for those cutting out sugar

Heat almond milk up first, add the vanilla. When this mixture is getting warmer add the cocoa and sweetener. Mix with a whisk, it creates some foam, always fun to sip.

To make it really frothy I used my hand immersion that came with a blender container, because it’s small. But, you could put it into a blender, again this makes it frothy and more yummy.
Sit back, sip and enjoy.
