Sometimes that ray of hope rises when you wonder if people will use their voices to change something. The ray of hope right now is the following article where the goal is 1 million voices telling the FDA that people in America want what others around the planet have and that is labeling food that contains GMO’s. I want to go into a store and know what is in the food I’m buying so I can make an informed choice and I’ll bet you want that too.

If you do, then read the following article from JustLabelIt.org, sign the petition and send it along to your friends.

The past week has been incredible, and it’s all because of you.

More than 750,000 people have sent comments to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) demanding the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods.

This past October, when people like you – parents, farmers, health care professionals, and other concerned citizens – came together to launch this campaign, we only dreamed we would come so far, so quickly. It just goes to show how incredible our collective voice is and how out of step the FDA is with the desires of the American public.

You made this happen. It was thousands of people like you telling their friends and family about this issue that’s made this campaign such a success. Just last week, you succeeded in convincing MoveOn.org to promote Eric Schlosser and Gary Hirshberg’s petition on SignOn.org. In less than 36 hours, more than 200,000 people signed the petition to the FDA via SignOn.org – and brought us one step closer to our goal of one million comments.

You’re building a movement of people who care how their food is produced. This issue crosses partisan and ideological lines. Over 90 percent of Americans – left, right, and center – support labeling genetically engineered foods. Five hundred organizational allies from diverse perspectives have also partnered with us on this campaign.

At Just Label It, we’ve been working hard to create a big tent with many voices, all with a common ask of our government – label genetically engineered foods so we can make informed decisions. It’s our right. It’s time that the United States joins the more than 40 countries that require genetically engineered foods to be labeled.

Thank you for everything that you’ve done to help us get to 750,000 comments.

With deep gratitude,

– Naomi, Alex, Nancy, Sue, and the entire Just Label It team

You can find the complete article at VegNews. I thought this information might help you create a couple of vegan menu days at your home. Most of us grew up eating meat and it’s difficult to go through such a drastic change, but, as we become more educated and compassionate it will be a natural shift to understand that the animals we eat have feelings, are intelligent, feel pain and have families – just like us.

1. Chickens may be the most romantically inclined of all farm animals. They create strong social bonds and, in a natural environment, males will call hens over to share their food, even picking up and dropping food repeatedly in front of a hen as an offering. Hens make devoted mothers, too. Research reveals that even before her chicks hatch, a hen will call to them, and they respond from within their eggs. John Webster, emeritus professor at Bristol University, said that the way a hen teaches her chicks what to eat, where to find food, and what to avoid “is pretty close to culture—and an advanced one at that.”

2. Studies prove that pigs are smarter than our canine friends. On video game tests (yes, pigs can play videogames using joysticks they control with their mouths), they can perform as well as primates. Like a cat’s whiskers, a pig’s snout provides her with heightened senses to navigate and interact with her environment. In fact, pigs’ noses are so sensitive that they can smell roots and tubers deep underground, a skill that’s been used for centuries to find truffles.

3. Science shows that cows are good at figuring out problems and take pleasure in finding solutions. Researchers who challenged cows to open a door to get food measured the animals’ neural activity and found that their “brainwaves showed the cows’ excitement [when they solved the problem]; their heartbeat went up and some even jumped into the air. We called it their Eureka moment.”

4. Did you know that Ben Franklin believed the turkey—not the bald eagle—should be America’s icon? “The turkey is in comparison a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America … a bird of courage,” Franklin said. His admiration was well founded. These birds are smart, fast, and indeed brave. And turkeys have something in common with peacocks, too. Ever seen a wild tom (male turkey) trying to romance a hen? With his tail feathers stretching up and wings jutting downward, he doubles his size in an attempt to woo the apple of his eye.

5. Need a fifth reason to have a heart for farm animals? Like dogs and cats, farm animals are individuals with personalities, preferences, and most importantly, a desire to enjoy life instead of suffer.

This Valentine’s Day, you can have a heart for farm animals by sharing this article with your friends and family who may not yet understand who farm animals are, and encouraging them to sign up for the Humane Society of the United States’ Meatless Monday free weekly recipes!

Voices, voices, voices, many more voices are being raised and family farmers are at the forefront of being heard by the courts about how Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds are polluting the organic and non-gmo seeds.

Farmers used to build their own seed stores to use on their farms and they shared these feed stores with other farmers, now these are being contaminated.

We need to have our food labeled if it contains genetically modified ingredients, but, across the world it has been shown that when people know that their food contains genetically modified ingredients they will not buy it. That’s why some countries will not accept Monsanto’s seeds. We have the right to know and we can all support our farmers who want to have the right to raise non-GMO and organic food for us to eat.

Here is the information and the link to the original article:

By Leah Baines

On January 31st, family farmers will begin the first stage of a court case filed against agro-business powerhouse, Monsanto. The goal of the case, Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association (OSGATA) vs. Monsanto, is to protect the 300,000 organic and non-GMO American farmers from the genetic trespass of Monsanto’s genetically modified seeds, which contaminate organic crops and often leave farmers vulnerable to harmful patent infringement lawsuits.

Monsanto currently controls the genetics of nearly 90 percent of 5 major commodity crops including corn, soybeans, cotton, canola and sugar beets. Many farmers who do not use Monsanto seeds have had to stop growing their own crops in order to avoid genetic contamination from those used in fields nearby. According to OSGATA, Monsanto has “created an atmosphere of fear in rural America and driven dozens of farmers into bankruptcy.”

Food Democracy Now!, an organization working towards building a sustainable food system, says that Monsanto has filed 144 lawsuits against farmers, and settled out of court for undisclosed amounts of money for an additional 700 cases. These lawsuits leave farmers broke and unable to afford the legal costs associated with fighting Monsanto for something beyond their control in the first place.

Genetically engineered foods are appearing on supermarket shelves with increasing frequency. While the scientific debate about the benefits and risks of genetically engineered crops is vigorous and unlikely to reach a consensus anytime soon, you have a right to know what you are eating now.

Stand with EWG and the Just Label It campaign today and sign our petition to the FDA demanding that genetically engineered foods are labeled!

Use this link to sign the petition, then share it. If 13,000,000 people signed this, like they did for the SOPA and PIPA bills to save our free speech, the USDA would make changes to the labeling of our foods.

When asked, I shut my blog down, when asked. I signed petitions, when asked, I emailed others and asked them to sign petitions and forward their emails to others. Millions of us did this and because of our efforts Congress has stopped the SOPA and PIPA bill, we have saved our freedom of speech. How incredible that 13 million voices were raised so quickly, what an example of how people CAN USE THEIR VOICES to let our government know that we will not give up our right to communicate freely on the web.

I wonder how many more millions would have raised their voices if, say, twitter and facebook had shut down for a couple of hours!

Kudos to you! My wish would be that we would speak this loudly about our food, that we would stop Monsanto’s GMO, that we would have labels on our food so we know that it is not genetically modified. That we would save the small family farmers. We deserve the right to know what we are eating. Hopefully this will encourage us to lift our strong voices in creating a world where people are living abundant and peaceful lives.

Congratulations to all of us!

Below is the email I received today about this tremendous victory:

A big hurrah to you!!!!! We’ve won for now — SOPA and PIPA were dropped by Congress today — the votes we’ve been scrambling to mobilize against have been cancelled.

The largest online protest in history has fundamentally changed the game. You were heard.

On January 18th, 13 million of us took the time to tell Congress to protect free speech rights on the internet. Hundreds of millions, maybe a billion, people all around the world saw what we did on Wednesday. See the amazing numbers here and tell everyone what you did.

This was unprecedented. Your activism may have changed the way people fight for the public interest and basic rights forever.

The MPAA (the lobby for big movie studios which created these terrible bills) was shocked and seemingly humbled. “‘This was a whole new different game all of a sudden,’ MPAA Chairman and former Senator Chris Dodd told the New York Times. ‘[PIPA and SOPA were] considered by many to be a slam dunk.’”

“’This is altogether a new effect,’ Mr. Dodd said, comparing the online movement to the Arab Spring. He could not remember seeing ‘an effort that was moving with this degree of support change this dramatically’ in the last four decades, he added.”

Tweet with us, shout on the internet with us, let’s celebrate: Round of applause to the 13 million people who stood up - #PIPA and #SOPA are tabled 4 now. #13millionapplause

P.S. China’s internet censorship system reminds us why the fight for democratic principles is so important:

In the New Yorker: ”Fittingly, perhaps, the discussion has unfolded on Weibo, the Twitter-like micro-blogging site that has a team of censors on staff to trim posts with sensitive political content. That is the arrangement that opponents of the bill have suggested would be required of American sites if they are compelled to police their users’ content for copyright violations. On Weibo, joking about SOPA’s similarities to Chinese censorship was sensitive enough that some posts on the subject were almost certainly deleted (though it can be hard to know).
…
After Chinese Web users got over the strangeness of hearing Americans debate the merits of screening the Web for objectionable content, they marvelled at the American response. Commentator Liu Qingyan wrote:

‘We should learn something from the way these American Internet companies protested against SOPA and PIPA. A free and democratic society depends on every one of us caring about politics and fighting for our rights. We will not achieve it by avoiding talk about politics.’”

An opportunity for those involved to learn how these spiritual teachers messages intertwine.

The book club takes place at Lighthouse Center Inc., in Whitmore Lake, MI, my spiritual home. I’m looking forward to the discussions, where we can all share what we have taken from these books, we can discuss our different opinions, we will not all agree, but we will learn from one another, this is part of the joy from reading and discussing – it helps all of us grow. Creating a safe place where we can discuss and share our ideas helps us learn to be open to others opinions and beliefs.

Although I haven’t written about my spiritual life it continues to become a larger part of me and has been an integral part of developing my Green Living Planet blog, writing my book and developing businesses that are in harmony with what I work at practicing each day.

For thousands of years this planet has created wars to advance and force religious opinions on one another, and yet, as I study the different ideologies and philosophies there is so much that is similar. The journey begins with one step – this is a small step, but, growth, understanding and acceptance must begin somewhere, and why not in this community. Discussions that have extremely diverse opinions are difficult, but, it is our opinion, it is our reality – our discomfort comes from the disturbance of our chosen reality.

I’m looking forward to reading these books, to be open and enjoy the ideas that will be shared in this group. Perhaps in your community you could begin a book club that will read books with different religious and spiritual ideas. You never know, there may be something that will resonate with your reality that will allow you to be more open and communicate easier with others who do not share your specific beliefs.

Peace and Acceptance,

Okay, so, you think it can’t be good without the milk and sugar, but, I was surprised! I was watching this segment on CBS Sunday Morning about chocolate, you know, the gourmet kind. Sunday morning, a good time to try to make something that was close to what I would like to drink, and, surprisingly, this is pretty good. I’ll give you the basic ingredients, what I used and, if needed, you can adjust.

Mmmm! Vegan Hot Chocolate

1 cup – 365 Organic Almond Milk Unsweetened*
1/2 tsp -365 organic vanilla
2 tsp – Dagoba Organic Chocolate – Cacao Powder**
2 tsp – Truvia***

* 365 is a Whole Foods brand, the unsweetened is important for me, no added sugar
** it’s important to use a high grade of cocoa and preferably organic
*** or sweetener of your choice, but, this is 0 calorie and safe for diabetics or for those cutting out sugar

Heat almond milk up first, add the vanilla. When this mixture is getting warmer add the cocoa and sweetener. Mix with a whisk, it creates some foam, always fun to sip.

To make it really frothy I used my hand immersion that came with a blender container, because it’s small. But, you could put it into a blender, again this makes it frothy and more yummy.
Sit back, sip and enjoy.

Also I wanted a safe product because I have been aware of Campaign for Safe Cosmetics who developed EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database where skin care/cosmetic companies have had the opportunity to participate in an organization that is raising the level of safe products for women, men and children. Apriori has recently achieved Champion status before the Safe Cosmetics Compact closed for signup by companies. Safe Cosmetics is part of the Environmental Working Group whose mission is to use the power of public information to protect public health and the environment.

When Apriori was introducing new product this last fall they asked for consultants to send in a photo with a testimonial for their favorite product and I thought, why not me, I really love the Celloxylin MD 20x Acid Peel and I sent in the photo in this blog with the testiomonial, “The word is NOURISHED, that’s what my skin feels like, especially after using Celloxylin MD. At 63, I feel healthy, strong and Love the glow of my skin.” When you open the CatalogNov2011 you’ll find my testimonial and photo on pg 21.

It’s so easy to explore my Apriori website and order product online, plus you can always contact me anytime if you have questions. I’ve been using this product for about 6 months now and have really noticed that my skin looks better, feels nourished and people have commented on how great my skin looks, people are always surprised when I tell them my age.

From: Organic Consumers Association

When you go to the above link you will be able to let your representatives, the President, the Secretary of Agriculture and the US Agricultural Marketing services know that organic means organic, not what the big agri business wants us to accept as organic. Protect your babies, your families, yourself and the planet by responding.

For our babies health,
Tana

Below is the article:

Get GMOs Out of Organic Baby Food!
Tell the National Organic Standards Board to Reject Martek’s Petition for Life’sDHA and Life’sARA!

In 2009, a front page Washington Post article, “Integrity of Federal ‘Organic’ Label Questioned.” explained how Martek Biosciences’ synthetic DHA and ARA ended up in organic infant formula. In 2006, National Organic Program staff told Martek that its synthetic DHA and ARA couldn’t be used in organic because they were synthetic and not on the National List. But, Martek’s lawyer, J. Friedman, was able to get their decision reversed by NOP director Barbara Robinson, with just a call and an email. He told the Washington Post, “I called Robinson up, I wrote an e-mail. It was a simple matter.”

This might be how the 1% get things done in Washington, but it sure isn’t legal! The National Organic Program attempted to remedy this situation by requiring Martek to formally ask permission to use its DHA and AHA in organic. The petition came before National Organic Standards board, and surprisingly, the NOSB voted to continue to allow Life’sDHA and Life’sARA in organic. The NOP and NOSB ignored evidence that Martek’s products should never have even been considered for use in organic in the first place. According to patents uncovered by the Cornucopia Institute, all of Martek’s DHA and ARA products are produced through genetic engineering, processed with volatile synthetic solvents and microencapsulated, three things that are expressly banned from USDA Organic. The Cornucopia Institute also found documents submitted by Martek to the FDA, in which the company claimed their DHA was just like Monsanto’s. A Martek representative clarified that its DHA was not developed by Monsanto, but that Monsanto did briefly own the technology before it reverted back to Martek.

Tragically, Martek’s Life’sDHA and Life’sARA, remain in hundreds of products, many of them certified USDA Organic.

Please ask the National Organic Standards Board to reverse its decision to approve Martek’s petition and urge the USDA National Organic Program to rescind the illegal 2006 approval and remove genetically engineered, volatile-synthetic-solvent-processed and microencapsulated Life’sDHA and Life’sARA from organic products.
