So Many Reasons for a Plant Based Diet

Personally becoming vegan with vegetarian tendencies has manifested for many reasons.

SpirituallyAll Beings have an essence, a soul, universal consciousness and the higher that vibration the more they feel emotions like pain, fear and peace. To live in peace (Ahimsa) with all beings means that I do them no harm, so I don’t eat them.

Health – As more studies show evidence that plant-based diets have many health benefits the choice seems reasonable to not eat animals. The media has chosen this newer term, plant based diets because it is a more comfortable term for people to hear than vegetarian or vegan. It is all the same. Eating fewer or no animals means less heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other modern diseases.

Ecologically – Ah, the planet, the single most effective way to help stop global warming is vegetarianism/veganism and there are lots of facts to back this one. Here are a few:

  • Animal agriculture takes up 70% of all agricultural land
  • 30% of the total land surface of the planet is used for animal agriculture
  • 70% of the former Amazon rainforest is used for pastureland and feed crops
  • Feeding animals for meat, dairy and egg production require growing some 10x more crops
  • The UN reports that almost 1/5 of the global warming is from livestock, more than from ALL of the world’s transportation combined

Compassion – Our parents, grandparents and distant cultures taught us that domestic animals like dogs and cats deserve to be our Loving companions and farm animals are to be slaughtered to eat.  Their beliefs does not mean it is true or must be continued. People will compassionately save animals from a disaster like the Gulf oil spill and then go home and eat a steak.  For me there is no difference between the wild bird dying from the oil and the cow that is treated inhumanely in a factory farm and painfully slaughtered.

Learning to live mindfully can be a challenge.
